Day 115 - Alice Springs

After Hancock came Weano, both featuring narrower passages through the rock, giving our little expedition an air of isolation and exploration. A large handrail down to our afternoon pool shattered that illusion though. Myself and Rory braved some rock climbing, and many games of fetch were played with a small yellow ball. Charlie hot suckered by a leech. Met some Nordies. When the water was calm, the reflections of the red rock and blue sky were unreal.

Quick stop with the non-English speakers to see Knox lookout, the setting sun casting shadows on the far wall of the gorge. We had also visited Oxer and Junction lookouts earlier, one of which contained a cross commemorating Jimmy 'Irish' Regan, a rescue worker who gave his life in the line of duty. Australia is always threatening, death is always lurking.

Back to basecamp for some over-priced pavlova, then hearty fajitas with cous-cous.

Next day (20th), we headed for Pardoo, only stopping for lunch in Port Hedland, one of the big industrial mining towns. Massive pieces of machinery were visible by the port, while huge tankers were tugged out to sea. Leftover fajitas tasted nearly as good as originals.

Pardoo station had a/c/ rooms, but no bigger than prison cells. With three beds in them! Helped Seán cook up a storm that night, steak with mushroom sauce, then beers with some miners, before bed at 11.
