Day 140 - Christchurch

Forgot to mention yesterday how fragrant NZ is. One unfortunate side-effect is hayfever - the pollen must be the same as at home too! Packed lots of antihistamines though, which is good.

Only thing I did today was visit the Air Force Museum. Had to stay at a different hostel last night, room-mates were completely unresponsive to my greeting, so left asap this morning, back to the welcoming Old Country House. It's a beautiful set-up - gorgeous buildings with an almost commune-like atmosphere. Danish Hilde and English Laura man the front desk, helpful and obliging.

Air Force Museum was interesting enough - lots of info on the development of the RNZAF, and tales of individual heroics. One hangar full of places, including two used in Trans-Antarctic expeditions. Becoming increasingly intrigued by Antarctic exploration - maybe a visit in the distant future?

Took an extra tour to see storage and restoration. Nothing of significant note, though the amount of volunteer work that goes into every piece is staggering. Highlight of the day was a chat with a former RNZAF member, Bernadine. She explained all about the history of the base, the future plans for an extension, and indeed about the earthquake damage. Her own wooden house survived, but any brick structures were badly affected. It's upsetting how many glorious old stone churches and colleges are fenced off. The family court now meets in a room at the museum.

Dinner at hostel, talk with German Andy briefly. Off to Kaikoura tomorrow - excitement!
